Our History

1933

Wantz Distributors Inc, founded in 1933 by Hiram B. Wantz, was initially organized to sell, market and distribute malt beverage products in Washington County, Maryland. Our original products included several regional brews like Cumberland Brewery, C. Schimdt and Lowenbrau. The company was originally located on 88 West Lee Street in downtown Hagerstown, Maryland.

Our History

1934

The Anheuser-Busch brewery became a part of the our portfolio in 1934. Over time, the local brands were sold, and second generation Hiram B. Wantz Jr. dedicated all efforts to grow the Budweiser brands.

Our History

1950’s

We expanded warehouses and moved to 18128 Oak Ridge Drive in the 1950’s, sharing a building with Larkin Wholesalers.

Our History

2000

Fourth generation founding family member Eric Riser was named President in 2000

Our History

2004

In 2004 Wantz Distributors moved from its Oak Ridge Drive location to our current state of the art climate controlled warehouse on Hopewell Road in Hagerstown.

Our History

2005

In August 2005, Wantz purchased distribution rights to Frederick and Carroll Counties in Maryland. Overnight the company increased it’s footprint by 239% and went from a staff of 13 to 43.

Our History

2009

In 2009, Wantz expanded distribution to include several independent suppliers, acquiring the rights to Troeg’s, SweetWater, Bells, Victory and many others with whom we have continued to foster partnerships.

Our History

2009

Always growing, Wantz purchased distribution rights to Allegany and Garrett Counties in Maryland in October 2009. With this newly expanded territory, Wantz now covered a area of 2,700 sq miles with a population of 660,000. This represented a 68% increased footprint and a 19% increase in population served. At that time Wantz also added an additional 30,000 sq ft of space to our new warehouse in order to store enough beer to effectively distribute within our expanded territory.

Our History

2020

In 2020, our warehouse became green powered with Solar Panels installed on our roof, generating over 450 MWh annually. The remainder of our warehouse is power sourced from wind.

Our History

2023

Continuously aware of changes in the market and consumer demand, Wantz has placed an additional focus on becoming a total beverage wholesaler for our retail and supplier partners, carrying not only malted beverages but also wine, spirits and non-alcoholic products. In 2023 we began distributing our non-alcoholic beverages throughout Montgomery County MD, bringing our distribution footprint farther south-east.

Our History

2023

Additionally in 2023, Wantz further evolved our high end beer portfolio, acquiring rights to sell and distribute an increased variety of high end suppliers.

Our History

Today

Our growth in the number of brands we carry has led to a need for additional space and so currently we are near completion of another expansion to our existing warehouse, adding 35,000 sq feet. We are always looking to the future but with strong ties to our past.

Bryan Laferte

On-Premise Team Leader
My career at Wantz started in 2019.

I had never been in the beer or sales industry before but finally found my love for work!  I started out in our entry-level position as a Sales Assistant for several months and then transitioned into a “Combo Rep” in which I took care of both liquor stores and bars/restaurants in Frederick County MD. I then moved to a Key Account Manager role for Carroll and Frederick County where I only oversaw high volume bars and restaurants. A year and a half later, I was able to take a management position for the part of the beer business I loved the most, the On-Premise. I have lived in Washington County for 30 years and have a beautiful fiancé (Brittany) who I will be getting married to in 2025. We have a Yorkie Poo named Bailey that we love and cannot wait to have kids of our own to raise. My hobbies are vacationing, going to the swimming pool, hanging with friends and family and shooting pool on a team in a local pool league.
